Hi Des,

Thanks for the reply.

As I said I still agree with every point you made, likewise your comment.

I think you've actually hit the nail on the head as to where our disagreement comes from, where you've said:

We weren’t necessarily saying “You guys need to know this” so much as “This is what modern web development is like in OUR world”.

And the problem being that at the time it did indeed feel as if it was your intention to make us aware of these technical capabilities, vis; the things that Flash or holistically what creativity can achieve - that just because it's on the Web doesn't mean it has to be boring - rather than that there are others unaware of that (and/or unaware of us).

Not to say even, that this is a reflection upon your presentation as much as probably because it was received at the end of a day full of instructional talks and tutorials!

Cheers,
Marc

Hey Marc,

Thanks for this.

I'd just like to explain myself a bit better than I did on stage.

1. "Outdated examples" -- all of the examples used are live valid websites right now. Most of them receive an awful lot of traffic. If they're outdated in that "Flash developers know better" -- fair enough. But we weren't necessarily saying "You guys need to know this" so much as "This is what modern web development is like in OUR world".

2. Regarding the site that "uses flash for the wrong reasons". This wasn't supposed to be an example of "effective and considered flash usage" it was an example of how doing something unconventional can get you attention. That portfolio page has been a smash hit, linked up all over the place. Try telling the author he should have been more informed in his usage of flash and thoughtful navigation. That's the point I was making.

3. I did indeed say the web is "moving towards multimedia". I believe that. A more considered statement would be "from the point of view of a modern successful web agency shipping web applications to clients, multimedia is certainly emerging as a very popular feature".

Considering it's blatant technical superiority in some areas, Flash has remained a bystander in most popular web applications, used to render video and audio, but little else. In "my" world, things like jQuery have ran riot for the ease at which they can be used, where as Flex has still remained something for "flash guys".

As I said, "my world" is starting to be requested more and more RIA type technology, which means that we're theoretically in trouble. That was where the pen-knife/flamethrower line came from.

Hope that makes sense to you.
